David Hinchliffe: Chapel on the Bridge

Many thanks to David Hinchliffe for sharing this poem and drawing about Chapel on the Bridge in Rotherham. David wrote this poem for Rotherham Flourish course.

drawing of a bridge over a river

I’ve been inside and seen
the five hundred years old door when it was a jail house.

I have seen the bridge when it was in flood
I would have been 10 years old in the 1960s.

I once threw 20 cigarettes in the river on the way to work.
Then bought some more from the shop. I would have been in my 20s.

I could have kicked myself for throwing my cigarettes.
Now, I am 61 and still on the bridge.
